A Phone Call I was Happy to Get!

So when the phone rang at about 4:30 I figured it might be the school. Adrian’s teacher, when she calls me, it’s usually around that time. I was happy to see it was the school, I was freaking out a little bit this morning talking to my mom about Adrian and I was worried about the teacher and the school and just not happy with how things were going. I was wanting to talk to the teacher but I was going to wait until conferences next week but was thrilled to get some conversation out of the way now.

She started off saying he was really bright and they were really excited about how he was doing. Ummm WOW pride moment there for mommy. I haven’t gotten a lot of positive feedback about Adrian, except from family so this was amazing to hear. I’m actually feeling very emotional about it. She said he was fascinated with the alphabet and can pick out the letters if she names them off. He loves singing the alphabet songs they do at school and doesn’t really like to write his name but will do it usually with some prompting. He hasn’t been running away or getting time outs for the last week and a half.

The autism team came in and helped her come up with a plan for him. They are using more PECS and more structure and it seems to be helping a whole lot.

I couldn’t be happier. I can’t wait for conferences next week.

  • Has the teacher tried using a weight on Adrian’s wrist for writing his name? Our son would not write as he did not feel the pencil in his hand…due to intermittent signals to the brain. Light weights helped him learn to write. Also, block lettering as more difficult, so he went directly to cursive writing. What about a daily communication manual between you and the teacher?
